Should I Study Mandarin Chinese, Russian or French?

Question by Armand: Should I Study Mandarin Chinese, Russian or French?
I pick up languages very easily. So, none of these would really be a challenge.

Anyway, I need to pick one before my college orientation in a couple of months. Which would be the most useful and why?

  1. im guessing mandarin chinese or french…
who speeks russian. jk my best friend is russian!!
haha im french so i say friench… its easier than the other 2.. but its your choice …
    good luck

  2. out of the three, Chinese would be the hardest and the most useful (over 1 billion Chinese)
Russian would be hard but enjoyable (20 years ago I would have said this was the most useful)
French would be easiest for an English speaker, especially when you think that our vocabulary has huge amounts of words borrowed from the french
French would be useful for Canada and Europe

  3. French is spoken in lots of places. Plus, you don’t have to learn a new alphabet.

  4. Mandarin is supposed to be the language to know in the future, so if you´re looking for an introduction to something you want to continue and use, that would be the one.

On the other hand, I love French. Just love the way it sounds.

And I always wanted to learn Russian – grew up during the cold war, you know…

so, if that isn´t part of the equation, any of the above would be good for their own beauties.

  5. Chinese: If you’re Chinese or are up to a challenge. You’ll be able to speak to 1 billion people.

French: Sounds nice, easy, close to English, and spoken by about 500 million people.

Russian: Easy alphabet (I learned it in about an hour and a half). 6 different ways to say one word, pretty tough. About 255 million speakers.

  6. It depends what you want to use it for.

French is my favourite simply because it sounds elegant. It’s also the easiest!

Mandarin Chinese would probably be most useful. China is an upcoming place in business and is becoming very powerful. Lots of employers are looking for people who speak Mandarin to act as translators etc.

I have some friends who are studying the Russian language. They are highly intelligent and still find it tough. You will be able to read all the best literature in it’s original language though!!

Overall I would say Mandarin. It’s now one of the most important languages in the world.

  7. French would be the easiest to learn, Mandarin will be more and more popular, Rooskie is just cool, but useless unless you are in the FUSSR
