No, I don’t think they would regard China as their home if they were born and raise up outside China.
However I think they youl regard themselves as part of Chinese nationality/race/ethnically or that ever term you want to use..
As for supporting the Chinese team who knows, I guess it depends on the factors of the event where Singaporians in it, were Chinese in it, there Chinese vs a team the Singaporians hate etc etc etc.
I would like to say yes, but the sad answer is no. I’m not really Singaporean Chinese, i’m actually Singaporean Chinese Korean. But then, many of my Singaporean Chinese friends regard China as a foreign country. Strangely and ironically enough, i feel an even stronger bond with China despite my Korean heritage. More so than most Singaporean Chinese, anyway. The same goes for Korea.
Yesh, most Singaporean Chinese do not regard China as their home because China is under communist rule. Well, the people who says that China is an evil country under strict Communist rule is absolutely wrong. I’ve visited China many times, and China strikes me as a ‘Communist country which is not very Communist’. Free speech and expression of opinions is allowed, and they certainly don’t brainwash scholars. Anyone who is capable is allowed to take up the position of governance. The people of China aren’t exactly poor, oppressed, pathetic farmers we all imagine them to be. I have many Chinese friends, and their parents are influential people, like doctors, lawyers, and so on.
The thing that is stranger still, is that even though the Singaproean Olypmic Team was mostly made up of Chinese Nationals, the Singaproean Chinese in Singapore still pretty much rooted for them. It didn’t really matter to most of us. Anyway, it’s difficult to find local talent in Singapore; everyone’s too obessessed with studying, if not their careers. How do you expect to groom sports talents in such an environment. Not to mention, Singapore has a population of only 4.5 million people. We still need people to run the country and keep our economy going. That’s more important than sports achievements.
Do British Americans still regard UK as their home even though they are born in US?
Do Italian American still regard Italy as their home even though they are born in US?
Do Irish American still regard Ireland as their home even though they are born in US?
well, people who were born and live in Singapore will care for Singapore, that’s obvious… but that’s very personal… if people plan to move back to China they may care for China more… there is no one answer
I am Singaporean chinese, I don’t support china olympics term and many other china behind door incidents/accidents.
no
Perhaps there may be “some” from the older generation of Mandarin-versed Singapore Chinese who might look favorably at China as their ‘mother country’ … but the huge majority of Singapore Chinese most definitely identify themselves as Singaporean 1st, Chinese 2nd; and almost never regard China as their ‘home country’ – it can’t be!
Singaporeans, having been exposed to Western culture all their lives are invariably influenced by foreign culture – many even use the English language (not Mandarin nor a Chinese dialect) to think, let alone speak. MM Lee Kuan Yew has referred to this segment of Singaporeans as “WOG” Western Oriented Gentlemen – people with Western mindsets, tastes, outlook etc who disdain the core values of a China culture. The most honourable minister is not wrong to single them out because as an overseas-born part Chinese, I see the value of his shrewd observance of Singapore demographics and fully concur with it. PM Lee Hsien Loong has also reiterated that Singapore cannot adopt the Western mold of democracy for Singapore and i fully agree too.
A segment of Singaporeans may even feel they are not enjoying enough “freedom” like those living in the West, even in prosperous democratic 1st world Singapore. Naturally, the idea of a Socialist China come across as forbidding; hence they cast China in a negative light.
Only a China-born person with China citizenship can regard China as his/her motherland. Overseas-born Chinese with foreign nationalities cannot identify themselves as “Chinese” even though that person is of Chinese ancestry.
“No” Singapore Chinese do NOT regard China as their home.
